One of the speakers said - There are some who still dispute upon the rival claims of Bruce and Balliol to the crown. Over the coffins of John Knox and Queen Mary I fierce contentions are still carried on . But there is one name which silences all controversy ; there is one man in our history before whom all Scotsmen stand calm , reverent , reconciled .......that man is William Wallace . We all feel he was connected with no party , and engaged in no party work ; that he belonged to the privileged few who found or save nations , and whom posterity venerate with unmingled and undivided homage ....he is the highest and purest symbol of Scottish nationality .

Order this picture The Wallace Monument was built on Abbey Craig , near the spot where Wallace and Murray surveyed the ground before the battle of Stirling Bridge . It was completed in September 1869 at a cost of £18,000 and it was designed by J T Roehead of Glasgow. It is 36 feet square and 220 feet high . In 1887 the first busts in the Hall of Heroes were unveiled and this statue of Wallace by D W Stevenson was added to the outside of the monument . The Scots community in Baltimore paid for a copy of the statue , and it stands in Druid Park. In 1888 the Wallace sword was handed over to the Monument .
