The next chance for Vettriano fans to buy original works is in May . Philip Gregory, of Lyon and Turnbull, the auction house which plans to sell ten Vettrianos on 28 May, said " for a living artist to achieve the highest price for a Scottish artist - higher even than the colourists - is incredible." According to Mr Gregory, at the moment, Vettriano can do no wrong. He said that while "we haven't gone mad", the prices set are certainly up after The Singing Butler sale. One painting, A Kind Of Loving, is priced at between £50,000 and £70,000. "At the moment he is very much ascending, but tastes change. Who know what will happen in ten or 20 years' time." Vettriano has an exhibition of 35 new works at the Portland Gallery, London, in June, to be followed by a new book in October, an updated version of Lovers and Other Strangers, first published in 2000.   Vettriano said "I am troubled by the exposure I get. I never dreamed that The Singing Butler would be the best-selling print in Britain. I thought I’d make a couple of thousand a year." There has been speculation that, realising the effect of a flooded market, he has cut down on his paintings. Last year, the once-prolific artist completed only six works. Rumours have started that this is part of Vettriano’s carefully choreographed image, a ploy that will, eventually, drive up the price of his paintings. One source in the art world said: "The publicity shutdown is all part of a deliberate, calculated strategy. He’s a very bright man and he likes to create a mystique about himself, which doesn’t do him any harm at all. "It’s all about price. If you wanted to drive up the price of paintings, what better than to disappear into the shadows for a while ..."
