Loch Lomond is the largest and most picturesque stretch of water in Britain. It is 27 miles long and 5 miles across at the widest point .Two thirds of it lies below sea level. At Inversnaid it is 620 feet deep. There are 30 wooded islands mostly in the southern part of the loch. The largest is Inchmurrin , with a ruined castle once the seat of the Earls of Lennox . Inchcailloch , near Balmaha , has the ruins of a nunnery and is the burial place of the Macgregors .
