Buy this Art Print The house was enlarged in 1721 to designs by William Adam and his three sons, John, Robert and James carried on the work, particularly the interior decoration. Hopetoun House has always been the home of the Earls of Hopetoun (who later became Marquess of Linlithgow) but although it is still a family home, it is now administered by a Preservation Trust. As with so many old, large buildings, maintenance costs are high and the income from paying visitors and hosting events is not enough to pay for major renovations. In 1995, a £4 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund rescued the estate from financial ruin. The Trustees have now decided to sell off parts of the 100-acre estate and have put the Garden House - built in 1825 for the head gardener - on the market at £345,000.
