GOVERNMENT agency were duped into allowing raves to be held at a castle built by Robert the Bruce's grandson. Historic Scotland believed 14th-century Dundonald Castle in Ayrshire was being used for birthday and works leaving parties. But police were called in after angry residents in the village complained of loud music and fireworks. An ancient wall surrounding the castle was badly damaged during one of the ticketed events. Horrified staff at the castle found damaged stones, beer bottles and broken glass everywhere after one bash. Castle supporters had warned Historic Scotland that they were being fooled into hiring out the building to rave organisers. Fears were aroused when members of Friends of Dundonald Castle stewarded a ``private party'' last month. Friends member John Hunter-Paterson said: ``The noise and fireworks caused distress to neighbouring residents, there was damage to the Barmkin Wall and stones had been pulled out.'' Friends members tried to halt a second party booked by the same group three weeks later. Historic Scotland were unable to cancel the bash but they plan to tighten up booking procedures for the castle, which can be hired for £220 a night. Strathclyde Police confirmed a 33-year-old man had been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with ``licensing issues'' at the castle last month.
