In 1320
Robert
the Bruce
had won the Wars of Independence. The English king ,Edward
II , continued to make claims on the Scottish throne . His
claims were supported by the Pope . Bruce refused to accept
letters from the Pope asking him to come to Avignon because
they were addressed to ' Our beloved son Robert who says he
is king of Scotland ' On April 6
1320 Bruce's nobles gathered at Arbroath Abbey to sign a
letter to the Pope declaring their support for their
king. This

' So long as one hundred of us remain alive,we will never in
any degree be subject to the dominion of the English . Since
not for glory , riches or honours do we fight , but for
freedom alone , which no man loses but with his life . '
The Declaration of Arbroath is often called the most
important document in the history of Scotland. It was an
assertion of the rights of the ordinary man to freedom and a
powerful statement of Scottish nationalism . In many ways
the American Declaration of Independence is an echo of this
statement , four centuries later .
