Jack Vettriano South Bank special Vettriano was the subject of a South Bank special on TV on 21 March . He was interviewed by Melvynn Bragg about his career and methods of working . Bragg said that although Vettriano was probably the most popular artist in Britain in terms of sales of his prints he has not been accepted by the art establishment , in common with many other artists like Van Gogh . Jack Vettriano - Patron of the University of St Andrews Charities Campaign Fashion Show and the host of a painting masterclass to be held at the University later this month - has received a Doctor of Letters on Tuesday 24 June 2003. In less than ten years, Jack Vettriano has emerged from obscurity to become Britain's foremost contemporary narrative painter despite having never received any formal art school training.   It was fourteen years before Vettriano felt ready to show any of his work in public. In 1989 he offered two works to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition; both were accepted and sold on the first day. The following year, an equally enthusiastic reaction greeted the three paintings, which he entered for the prestigious Summer Exhibition at London's Royal Academy.   In the last nine years, interest in, and desire for his work, has grown rapidly.
